Samuel “Sam” Erwin

ROCKWELL -- Samuel "Sam" Earl Erwin, 76, Rockwell, died Sunday (May 18, 2003) at Meadows of Rockwell Retirement Center.

Born Oct. 13, 1926, in Stanly County, Mr. Erwin was a son of the late Wilson Mack and Florence Augusta Hicks Erwin. He served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II. He sang with the Chapeleers at Gen. George C. Patton's funeral.

A graduate of Mount Ulla High School and Pfeiffer College, he held a bachelor of science from Catawba College and a master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

He retired after 30 years as a teacher and principal in Rowan County, Winston-Salem and Raleigh schools. Later, he opened Benchmark Realty, a commercial, residential, land and development property business in Cleveland. He operated the business until his health no longer permitted.

A member of St. James Lutheran Church, he was a former member of Thyatira Presbyterian Church, Millbridge, and was a member of the Mount Ulla-Bear Poplar Lions Club. He was associated with the Rockwell Golf Club.

Survivors include wife Elizabeth Misenheimer Erwin, whom he married Oct. 2, 1992; brother James "Jim"Erwin, Salisbury; and sisters Carol E. Shuping, Columbia, S.C., and Florence E. Houck, Mount Ulla.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. James Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Craig Sigmon, pastor, and the Rev. Charles McManus, former pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church fellowship hall. The body can be viewed between 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Powles Funeral Home.
