Mayford Thurman Carter

Mayford Thurman Carter, 89, of Rockwell, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018.

He was born March 31, 1928, in Rockwell to the late George Issac Carter and Letha Hopkins Carter. He attended Rockwell and Mt. Pleasant schools and retired from Hoechst Celanese where he was a mechanic. Mr. Carter was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II and Korea. He was a member of VFW Post 9134 in Rockwell and was Past Commander of Faith American Legion Post 327. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with family.

Mr. Carter is survived by his daughter, Tammy Miller and husband, Pete of Rockwell, son, Phil Carter and wife, Kathy of Mocksville, fiancée, Marie Duncan of Rockwell, grandchildren, Terri Boger and husband, David of Rockwell, Joey Carter and wife, Jackie of Salisbury, Jessi Capps and husband, David, of Mocksville, Christy Thompson and husband, Todd of Troy, Amber Boger and husband, Justin of Mocksville and, Dallas Brown and wife, Jackie of Rockwell, and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Jane Artz Carter, son, Stanley Carter, sisters, Viola Thomas, Barbara Luther, Margie Fesperman, Annalene Goldston, and brothers, Claude Carter, LM "Pete" Carter, Charles Carter, Glenn Carter, Bill Carter, Hoy Carter, Lex Carter, Marvin Carter, Roy Carter, Ray Carter, Beauford Plyler and, Lloyd Carter.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, February 11, at Powles Staton Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 12, in Faith Lutheran Church, Faith, NC, with Rev. Randy Drafts, officiating.

Interment will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens in Rockwell with Military Graveside Rites by the United States Navy and Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care, or the Alzheimer's Association.
