Margaret Johnson Newport

Margaret Johnson Newport, 92, died at 11:51 pm Saturday, July 15, 2017, at her home in New London, NC.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 18 at New London United Methodist Church, where she was a member. The Rev. James Pyatt will officiate. The family will receive friends after the service. A private family burial will be held in New London Cemetery prior to the service.

Mrs. Newport was born February 24, 1925 in Misenheimer, NC to the late James Dickerson and Agnes Peeler Johnson. She graduated from Richfield High School and Mitchell College in Misenheimer. On August 11, 1946 she married Coy H. Newport  who had returned from service in World War II as a POW in Germany.  Mr. Newport preceded her in death on November 6, 2001. Mr. And Mrs. Newport started their joint lifetime career in 1957 with one of the first coin laundries, Coy’s Laundromat, in Albemarle, NC.

Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were brother J.D. Johnson,Jr. and sisters Lucille Eagle, Ruby Leonard, Mary Frances Bowers, and Virginia Johnson.

Surviving are son Dale R. Newport and wife Cindy of New London and son Kent E. Newport and wife Shannon of Clemson,SC/Albemarle,NC; grandchildren Emily Newport Beaver and husband David of Albemarle, Martha Newport Pickler and husband Neal of Albemarle, Ben Newport of Albemarle, and Sarah Newport of Clemson; great-grandchildren Riley and Coy David Beaver and Addie Pickler.

The family would like to thank Margaret’s special angels Nancy Briggs, Cissie Isenhour Seaver, and Judy Haywood for their loving and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to New London United Methodist Church.
