Ellen Culp Taylor

SALISBURY - Ellen Lorene Culp "Winnie" Taylor, 88, of Columbia, S.C., and formerly of Salisbury, died Monday, April 26, 2010, at Providence Hospital-Main in Columbia.

Born Nov. 3, 1921, in Badin, she was the daughter of the late Mary Smith Culp and Arlie Franklin Culp, Sr. She was educated in Badin schools and graduated as Valedictorian of Badin High School Class of 1938.

She was sales person at a department store in Albemarle. She served in the Cradle Roll Department of First United Church for 25 years before retiring. Mrs. Taylor enjoyed growing flowers and sharing them with people.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of the First Methodist Church of Salisbury, the Church Circle and served on the Altar Guild. She was also a Girl Scout leader.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Benjamin Taylor, on Nov. 25, 2004; her daughter, Susannah "Susan" Taylor Wilds, on Jan. 23, 2007; and sisters Hazelene Cox and Frances Hammill.

Survivors include her granddaughter, Alyse Stanley and husband Kevin of Charlotte; sisters Mary Spires and husband C.E. of Salisbury and Dorothy Moore of Charlotte; brother Arlie Culp, Jr. of Ramseur; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service: Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Haines officiating. Interment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at Summersett Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence of her sister, Mary Spires, at other times.

Memorials: May be made to the First United Methodist Church, Salisbury, NC.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
