Kenneth Eugene Mullis “Butch”, 79, passed peacefully away on Friday, November 30th, 2018 surrounded by family at Atrium Health in Concord, North Carolina. Born November 21st, 1939 to the late George W. and Callie Mae Herrin Mullis, he was the youngest and the last surviving of their five children.
Ken was born and raised on Duval Street in Concord, graduated from Concord High School in 1958, from Wingate College in 1961, and then went on to finish his degree in Engineering at North Carolina State University in 1989. He began his career as a draftsman at Cannon Mills then transitioned into teaching Drafting and Design, Math, and Engineering at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in Salisbury, North Carolina. He found that teaching was his passion and was a beloved teacher for 40 years, touching the lives of many students.
Ken was an avid sports fan, his favorite teams being UNC Chapel Hill, the Atlanta Braves, and the Mount Pleasant Tigers. He enjoyed traveling to Atlanta with various family members to attend Braves games and taking bus tours across the United States with his wife, Shelbia, and their friends. His favorite pastime was attending any sporting or band event that his grandchildren participated in.
His family and friends will remember him as a teacher, a mentor, a cheerleader for his grandchildren in every aspect of the word and stubborn to a fault. He loved his church, Boger Reformed Church, in Concord, serving in any way he was needed, and supporting their many ministries.
Left to continue his legacy are his wife Shelbia Manus Mullis, his three daughters: Dana Garrow (husband, Ron), Kerry Harper, and Laurie Miller (husband, Robert). The apples of his eye were his twelve grandchildren: Jonathan (wife, Corinthia), Phillip (wife, Sarah), Ben, and Claire Garrow, Virginia and Marshall (fiancé, Leighann) Harper, Garrett, Callie, Taylor Hammill (husband, Bradley), Dalton, Hayden, and Tristan Miller. Other members of his family include: brother-in-law R.A. Plummer, sister-in-laws Doris and Margaret Mullis, numerous nieces and nephews and not to be forgotten, his beloved blue & gold macaw, Floyd.
A celebration of Ken’s life is planned for Saturday, December 8th, 2018 at Boger Reformed Church, Concord, North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m. in the Ladies’ Bible Class. The memorial service, led by Pastor Don McManus, will begin at 2:30 pm, in the sanctuary, followed by a committal service in the church cemetery.
The family is being served by Gordon Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant and can be reached at the home of Laurie and Robert Miller.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Boger Reformed Church, 7313 Gold Hill Road, Concord, NC.
