Notes for Bertie Burris
Bertie Strother

Tuesday, March 13, 2007 — Bertie Burris Strother, 88, of Kannapolis died Sunday, March 11, 2007.

She was born in Stanly County Sept. 15, 1918, a daughter of the late P.L. Burris and the late Ellen Lambert Burris.

Bertie graduated with honors from Ridgecrest High School and Wingate Junior College. When she retired from Cannon Mills in 1983 after 36 years, she became a familiar face at Mark’s Cafeteria in Albemarle, which she and her husband, Mark Strother owned and and managed until Mark’s death in 1988. Bertie became a security guard at Pillowtex (now the NC Biomedical Research Campus) in Kannapolis where she made many new friends. An article was written about Bertie in the Salisbury Post “81-year-old guard not ready to give up.” But at 88, Bertie lost her ability to speak and was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). She was still able to communicate in writing and gestures until she resigned from American Security in January 19, 2007.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Diggs, and her second husband, Mark Strother; a sister, Esther Gordon and a brother, Harold Burris.

Bertie is survived by her daughter Bonnie D. Lowder and husband, Sherrill, of Charlotte, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Wagner of Charlotte; a sister, Gertrude Hatley of Mission; a brother, Charles Burris of Mission; and a brother Robert Burris of Mt. Pleasant.

A graveside service will be conducted by Hospice Chaplain Patti Tillman Simpson at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at Carolina Memorial Park, Hwy. 29 (North of I-85), Kannapolis. Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is in charge.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County.

Special thanks from the family to Edward “Pete” Clark and Marie Clark.
