RALEIGH Mr. Gilbert "Sonny" Newell, 81, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2012 at North Carolina State Veterans Nursing Home in Fayetteville. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 4, at 11 a.m. at Carolina Memorial Park in Concord, with Mark McClamrock, pastor of the Concord ARP Church of Concord, and son-in-law, Scott Swaringen, officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.
Mr. Newell was born Jan. 10, 1931, in Mecklenburg County, son of the late Samuel Patterson Newell and Virginia Verble Newell of Concord. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Moyle Newell, and a sister, Helen Humberger of Concord.
The Newells had lived in Concord until 2006 when they moved to Raleigh to be with their daughter and her family. Sonny enjoyed spending time with family and friends, outside activities, and fishing. He was an Army veteran, having served in the Korean War.
Survivors include his daughter, Belinda Swaringen, and her husband, Scott of Raleigh; grandchildren, Kevin and Shannon Swaringen of Raleigh; sisters, Dorothy Bryant of Concord and Peggy Ramsey of Cocoa Beach, Fla.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to United Hospice of Eastern Carolina, 332 North Brightleaf Blvd., Suite C Smithfield, NC 27577.
Wilkinson Funeral Home of Concord is in charge of arrangements.
