Mrs. Lanier was born August 17, 1920 in Durham to the Reverend Dr. Harry C. Smith and Caroline Olson Smith. She graduated from Greensboro College in 1943 with a degree in Religious Education. As an active and faithful member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church for many years, she served on numerous church committees, taught Sunday school, and was a youth leader. She especially enjoyed the music of the church, of which she was a supportive listener. Her many special friends include the members of the Susannah Wesley Sunday School class.

Mrs. Lanier was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be remembered for her thoughtful, generous spirit, her love of animals and plants, and the quiet positive impact she had on all of those around her.

Mrs. Lanier was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 50 years, Benjamin Lanier.

She is survived by her loving daughters Rebecca Lanier Howard (Becky), Carolyn Lanier Neal and husband Ken, and Eugenia Lanier Ivy; grandchildren Meredith Howard Stanley and husband Brian of Asheville, Ellen Neal Ashwell and husband Jamie of West End, Sarah Neal of Clinton, Brian Ivy and David Ivy of Winston-Salem; her sister-in-law Olive Lanier; many loving nieces and nephews; her devoted long-term caregivers Beverly Hill and Karen Elledge; and two very special friends Ann and Wayne Byrum of Onley, Va.

A funeral service for Mrs. Lanier, conducted by Dr. Earl Wilson, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 16, 2008 at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church. A graveside service will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will welcome friends on Sunday, June 15, 4-6 p.m. at Salem Funeral Home.
