Mary Margaret McCombs

Mrs. Mary Margaret File McCombs, previously of Faith, NC and wife of the late Lawson J. McCombs, died March 22, 2005 at the age of 92 at the Carolina House of Chapel Hill, NC. Born May 20, 1912, she was the sixth of nine children of the late Alexander W. File and Dora Simmerson File of Spencer, NC.

After attending high school in Spencer and working for several years at the North Carolina Finishing Company, and Cannon Mills, Mary enlisted in the US Navy in July 1944 and reported for service within two months. In the WAVES, she served in the Personnel Separation Unit at Norfolk, VA. until her discharge in August 1946. Upon her return to Rowan County to live with a sister in Faith, she met the town's Postmaster Lawson McCombs. After a brief courtship, the couple was married at Faith Baptist Church on January 1, 1947. Following a honeymoon trip to Asheville in Lawson's shiny new 1946 Chevrolet, the newlyweds returned to Faith to make their home.

Working alongside her husband for many years as a postal clerk at Faith Post Office, Mary also intermittently operated Faith Soda Shop, and later, the Card Corner. From 1951 until 1969, she served as tax collector for the Town of Faith. A charter member of Faith American Legion Auxiliary, she also served for a number of years of the planning committee for Faith's Annual Fourth of July Celebration.

A longtime and devoted member of Shiloh United Church of Christ in Faith, Mary moved in 1991 to Chapel Hill, NC the home of her only son, Steven McCombs. she was a resident of Carolina House of Chapel Hill at the time of her passing. Lawson McCombs preceded his wife in death on January 12, 1984.

Throughout her life Mary had great love for gardening, antiques, poetry, and music.

The funeral service will be held, March 24, 2005 at 2:00 PM at the Shiloh United Church of Christ in Faith, followed by a Graveside service in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Wednesday at the Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell NC. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shiloh United Church of Christ Memorial Fund, PO Box 308 Faith, NC 28041, or to the Eastern NC chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. 400 Oberlin Rd.
