Melvin “Gene” Almond

Melvin “Gene” Almond, 78, of 28216-A N.C. 24-27, Albemarle, died at 5:19 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2007 in Stanly Regional Medical Center.

His funeral was at 11 a.m. Dec. 24 at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, Albemarle. The Rev. Bill Lovelace will officiate. Burial was in the church cemetery.

The family will meet at the home.

Born Aug. 12, 1929 in Albemarle, he was a son of the late Hugh Efird and Estelle Herrin Almond.

Mr. Almond was a graduate of Endy High School, where he played basketball, was a member of the Beta Club and an Eagle Scout.

He was employed by Almond Brothers Poultry, where he was a manager for the growers, and later owned Almond Poultry Service.

Mr. Almond was a long-time leader in Pine Grove United Methodist Church. He served as Sunday school teacher and superintendent, served on the Administrative Board and on the Pastor Parish Relation Committee and was a member of the Men’s Choir.

He served as a member of the school board in the 1960s.

He and his wife Jeanette celebrated 60 years of marriage the day before his death.

Mr. Almond was a strong and loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a role model for his extended family and community.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Phil Trexler Almond.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Jeanette Davis Almond of Albemarle; a son, Bruce G. Almond and wife, Diane; three daughters, Denise Almond Crosby and husband, John E., Terry Almond Peck and husband, James, of Albemarle, and Tracy Almond Gaddy and husband, Allen; grandchildren, Shelly Peck Mills, Brandy Peck Shoe, Jacqulyn Jaymes Peck, Amanda Almond Arey, Angela Almond Morrison, Thomas Gaddy, Katharine E. Crosby, J. Graham Crosby and Andrew J. Crosby; great-grandchildren, Trevor Speights, Jacob Speights, Bailey Speights, Ashley Arey Smith, Landon Arey, Ryan Morrison, Caleb Morrison, Trenton Gaddy; a brother, Bernard Keith Almond of Albemarle; and a sister, Emma Jane Culp of Tennessee.

Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church.
