Loy Joseph Eller

Loy Joseph Eller, 88, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Oct. 24, 2001) at Genesis Eldercare of Salisbury after a period of declining health.

Born Dec. 3, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Eller, a son of the late Arthur and Gertrude Poole Eller, was a graduate of Rockwell High School.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. A nose gunner on B-24 bombers, 8th Air Force in England, 466th Bomb Group, 487 Bomb Squadron, he flew the last missions into Germany before the end of the war. He received the Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the European Theater Ribbon.

In 1976, he retired as a supervisor from Cannon Mills, where he had worked a total of 38 years. He was a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and was active in all phases of the church, including the church council. He was also active with the Boy Scouts at Calvary Lutheran Church.

A son, Thomas Michael Eller, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Eloise Thomas Eller, whom he married Nov. 30, 1940; and sisters Florence Eller Brown and Ruby Eller Yarbrough, both of Salisbury.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. William H. Battermann. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 12-1 p.m. Friday at the church educational building.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.
