Clayton M. Axtell, III

Clayton M. Axtell, III, 57, passed away at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota on August 14, 2005. He was the son of the late Clayton M. Axtell, Jr. and Margaret Ritchie Axtell.

Mr. Axtell is survived by his wife, Catherine; his three sons, Christopher, Jonathan and Michael; his sisters, Margaret R. Axtell, Karen A. Arnold, and Susan R. Axtell; his aunts, Elizabeth Ella A. Stearns and Pricilla A. Van Valkenburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Axtell was a lifelong resident of Binghamton, graduating from Chenango Valley High School in 1966. He received a BA degree from Cornell University in 1970 and a JD from Cornell Law School in 1973. After law school he joined Hinman, Howard & Kattell, where he was a partner, specializing in commercial mortgages and bankruptcy law. He was a member of the Broome County Bar Association, the New York Bar Association, and the American Bar Association, and taught courses in creditors' rights at Broome Community College. Mr. Axtell was active in legal and civic affairs. He was a member of the Binghamton Club and Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was recently named president of the Conrad and Virginia Klee Foundation. He was also active with the Cornell Cooperative Extension, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society from all of which he received awards recognizing his volunteer service. Mr. Axtell was an avid sports fan of the Binghamton Senators and Junior Senators hockey, the Binghamton Mets and Cornell football and hockey. He coached youth sports, and in 1999 was awarded the first Cliff Hunter Memorial Coaching Award presented by the Southern Tier Hockey Association. He was a member of the undefeated Chenango Valley football team in 1964, and the 150-lb. Varsity football team at Cornell University, and for decades he participated in adult hockey leagues in Binghamton. He was his boys' greatest fan at their hockey, lacrosse, soccer games and all their activities. He will be deeply missed by all his family.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church, 72 Main St., Binghamton, N.Y. The Rev. Thomas G. Olsen will officiate. A private family burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Redeemer Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, or an educational fund for Clayton's children c/o Seton High School, 70 Seminary Ave., Binghamton, N.Y. 13905, or the charity of one's choice.
