Robert "Paul" Propst

Mr. Robert Paul Propst, 90, of Salisbury, NC passed away peacefully January 1, 2018 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury, NC.

Born August 10, 1927 in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Lonnie Youther and Bessie Sides Propst.

Mr. Propst was a graduate of Boyden High School, class of 1944 and Catawba College, class of 1948. He earned his master’s degree from Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in 1964. Mr. Propst retired as Senior Vice President after working 27 years at Security Bank after which he opened Paul Propst Insurance and Realty Co. Mr. Propst was a veteran of the US Navy and NC National Guard unit. He was a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion. He served as a former member and past president of Salisbury Kiwanis Club where he earned his 50 year membership pin. He was also a former member and past president of Spencer Lions Club; past member and president of Salisbury Sales and Marketing Club; and former member and past president of Catawba College Chiefs Club. In 1976 he was co-chairman of “Heritage for Tomorrow” fund raising campaign for Catawba College. He was a member of Salisbury Planning Board for 12 years, a member of the Rowan County ABC Board for 10 years, and a member of the UCC (United Church of Christ) Retirement Home Board for 10 years. He served on the initial board of the Salisbury Symphony. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and a past treasurer of the Salisbury-Spencer Merchant Association. He was a member of the Security Bank and Trust Company and Sun Trust Board of Managers for over 25 years. Mr. Propst was also a member of the Fulton Street Masonic Lodge #99 and a member of the Charlotte Oasis Club and a 32nd degree Mason.

Mr. Propst was an active member of First United Church of Christ where he served on the church council many times including serving as President and Treasurer of the council. He was active in the Dearborn-Isenberg Sunday School class, Primetimers and helped deliver Meals on Wheels.

Preceding him in death was an infant daughter, Paula Jean Propst, and five sisters and three brothers.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sara Jean Arey Propst, whom he married June 11, 1950; daughter, Robin P. Blackwell and husband Robert “Bob” Blackwell of Burlington, NC; son, Robert Bruce Propst and partner Julian Clark of Lake Wylie, SC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held in the church fellowship hall January 4, 2018 from 11-12:30PM at First United Church of Christ, 207 W. Horah St., Salisbury, NC. A Memorial service will follow at 1PM in the church sanctuary with Rev. Ken Clapp officiating.

The family would like to give special thanks to the VA Medical Center for the excellent care they extended to Mr. Propst.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Church of Christ, or Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House.
