Runal Richard Austin

SALISBURY- Mr. Runal "Richard" Austin, 90, of Salisbury, passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011 at Genesis Healthcare of Salisbury.

Richard was born April 23, 1921, in Richfield, the son of the late Orin Orestes Austin and Eva Lula Belle Miller Austin.

Richard was lifetime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and a member of the Golden Age Sunday School Class. Richard was very active in his church, he loved his church and especially the children of the church. He folded and handed out the bulletins faithfully at services, rang the church bell and was responsible for opening the church for services.

Richard loved to work in his garden. He retired from North Carolina Finishing Company after many years of faithful service.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Lyerly Austin, on May 9, 1993; brothers Eugene Austin and Harlo Austin; sisters Mary Katherine Austin and Betty Austin Starnes.

Survivors include brothers Raymond Austin, David Austin and wife Polly, John Austin and wife Barbara of Salisbury; sisters Lola Austin Burris of Albemarle and Faye Austin Yarborough and husband Joe of California; a number of nieces and nephews; his caregivers, Deen and Joan Brown Causey and Sarah Harris; and his cats, Blackie and Gray Baby.

Visitation: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 31 at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. David Ridenhour, pastor, Rev. Eddie Pless and Rev. Tommy Beaver. Richard will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the Funeral Service in the church.

Burial will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Memorials: Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary, or St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

Powles Funeral Home of Rockwell is assisting the Austin family.
