SALISBURY - Harlo Frank Austin, 89, of Salisbury, died unexpectedly Monday, July 9, 2007, at 11 pm at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Austin was born Feb. 8, 1918, in Morgan Township, Rowan County, the eldest son of the late Eva Lula Belle Miller Austin and Orin Orestus Austin. He was educated in the local schools and served 4-1/2 years as a mechanic in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Sicily, Italy, France and Germany and was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was employed at N.C. Finishing Company in Spencer for 42 years until his retirement.

His wife, Dorothy Eddleman Austin, died in 1991. A brother, Manual Eugene Austin, was killed in World War II and a sister, Mary Catherine Austin, died during childhood.

He is survived by sons Donald F. Austin and wife Judith and Kenneth E. Austin and wife Linda, both of Salisbury; daughter Linda A. Bailey and husband Bob of Woodleaf; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers Raymond, Richard, David and John, all of Salisbury; sisters Lola Burris of New London, Betty Starnes of Newport News, Va., and Fay Yarbrough of Concord, Calif.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Service: The funeral will be Thursday at 11 am at the Powles Funeral Home Chapel, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Jennie Hemrick, pastor of Unity Presbyterian Church, Woodleaf. Burial will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens with Military Graveside Rites conducted by Rowan County Honor Guard.

Memorials: Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
