GREENSBORO — After a courageous two year battle with cancer, Mrs. Carolyn Lewis passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Blumenthal's Jewish nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel officiated by Rev. Deryl Holiday. Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
Carolyn was born on April 11, 1926, to the late Daniel Augustus and Emma Lou Biles in Albemarle, N.C. She graduated from Albemarle High School as Salutatorian in the class of 1943. She moved to Greensboro in 1952 and began her career in law enforcement. She was one of the first detectives in the Youth Division of the Greensboro Police Department. She retired after 22 years of service. She was an active member of the American Business Women's Association and the North Carolina Policewomen's Association serving as president in 1961-1962. After her retirement, she remained active with the North Carolina Retired Peace Officers Association holding several offices.
Carolyn was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a loving, kind, and generous person and was dearly loved by her family and friends. She loved nature and was an avid gardener. Carolyn was a member of Sedgefield Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her late husband, Elwood Russell "Hamp" Hinson.
Surviving are her husband, Allen W. Lewis; her children, Anne Hinson Plummer and husband, Dave of Raleigh, N.C., Ken Hinson and wife, Deborah Kirk of Greensboro, N.C.; her grandson, Darryl Miller and wife, Michelle and her two great grand-children, Kyle and Ava Jane Miller of Raleigh, N.C. Carolyn is also survived by her sister, Frances Wright of Wadesboro, N.C.; and her brother, Mitchell Biles and wife, Opal of Mt. Gilead, N.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends.
