Doris McGraw Oakes

KANNAPOLIS - Doris Elizabeth McGraw Oakes, 59, of Kannapolis, passed away Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at her residence at Bob and Carol Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.

Born Feb. 12, 1949, in Cabarrus County, she was the daughter of the late Ruby Barrier McGraw and Clarence McGraw. Mrs. Oakes was a graduate of A.L. Brown High School in 1968.

A sales consultant for Avon, she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW, Albemarle. Mrs. Oakes was a member of Pilgrim Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers John and Edward McGraw; and a daughter, Donna Sloop, in 1994.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Oakes, whom she married in 1972; daughters Mildred"Millie" Aldridge (David) of Rockwell, Renee Hall (Lonnie) of China Grove; brother Clarence McGraw, Jr. (Mildred) of China Grove; sister Faye Layton (John) of Concord; and grandchildren Kristin Aldridge, Daniel Aldridge, Hailey Hall and Lyndsey Hall.

Visitation/Service: Visitation is 12-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Lyerly Funeral Home with the funeral service following in the James C. Lyerly Chapel with the Rev. Patrick Powell and the Rev. Larry Beaver officiating. Burial will follow at Salisbury National Cemetery.

At other times, the family will be at the home of her daughter, Renee Hall.
