Notes for Juanita Nelle Gardner
Juanita Somers

SALISBURY - Juanita Nelle Gardner Somers, age 96, was called home by the Lord on Jan. 15, 2013, where she has reunited with her husband, John Charles (Jan. 1, 1989), her son John Charles Jr. (Aug. 31, 1969) and her family and friends.

She was born Oct. 23, 1916, in Rowan County and was the daughter of the late Clifton Marcellus Truesdel Gardner (better known as C.T.) and Clara Belle (known as Mollie) Gantt Gardner.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Warren Gantt Gardner; sisters Leola Gardner Safrit, Mildred Gardner Byrd and Betty Gardner Smith; and her best friend, Betty Keahey.

Born and raised in Faith, she attended Granite Quarry High School. To fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse and serving others, as a young adult she journeyed by train to Washington, D.C. to attend the Sibley Hospital School of Nursing. While there, she met her future husband, John, who was attending Georgetown University under the G.I Bill. Together, they raised five children in the Virginia and Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C.: John Charles Somers Jr., Peter Clifton Somers, Juanita Gardner Kavalauskas (Jon), Jennifer Maria Duncan (Douglas) and Melissa Elizabeth Somers (Rebeca).

It is the quiet and gentle acts of kindness, giving and devotion to the Lord and family for which she will be remembered.

In addition to her four surviving children, she leaves behind eight grandchildren: Aryah, John and Nicholas Somers; Anna, Mary and Joseph Kavalauskas; and Jennifer and Douglas Duncan, Jr.

Visitation and Service: The family will receive friends for visitation in the Fireplace Lobby at Shiloh Reformed Church of Faith on Friday, Feb. 1 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Services follow at the church Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. conducted by the Rev. Wayne Trexler. Burial afterwards at the church cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are being made by Lyerly Funeral Home.

Memorials: The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her honor to Shiloh Reformed Church of Faith, N.C., Capital Improvement Fund, where she was a lifetime member.

Lyerly Funeral Home is serving the Somers family.
