Leola Safrit

FAITH - Leola Gardner Safrit, 87, Blue Ridge, Ga., formerly of Faith, died Friday (Jan. 19, 2001), at Chatuge Regional Hospital, Hiawassee, Ga.

Born March 1, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. Safrit was a daughter of the late Clifton T. and Clara Gantt Gardner. She was educated at Granite Quarry High School. A bookkeeper, she had retired in 1970 from the Dade County-Miami Airport Authority in Florida.

A longtime member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Florida, she was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Rockwell, where she sang in the choir, at the time of her death. She was also a member of Eastern Star 117 in Salisbury.

Her husband, Joseph Eugene Safrit, died Jan. 8, 1987.

Survivors include son Joseph G. Safrit, Raleigh; daughter Sandra G. Brauns, Blue Ridge, Ga.; sisters Mildred Byrd and Juanita Somers, both of Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. James Melton, pastor, Bethel Baptist Church, Rockwell. Burial, Shiloh United Church of Christ cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
