Notes for Betty Watkins Shankle
Betty Watkins Shankle

Betty Watkins Shankle, 89, of Norwood died Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Spring Arbor.

A Celebration of Betty’s Life will be held at a later date.

Betty was born July 20, 1928 in Stanly County to the late Marshall Grant and M.E. Mabry Shankle.

A person has to do some work to walk in the steps of Betty Shankle. No doubt she was raised with a powerful work ethic and a sense of determination that governed her life. When it comes to inspiration and dedication Betty was second to none. Having never married, Betty supported herself as a beautician in her own beauty salon “Betty’s Beauty Shop” for more than 40 years.

Betty was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Norwood where she was active in Sunday School, Faithful Ladies Circle, and the Merrymakers. She sang in the chancel choir and the Stanly County Chorale for many years. She enjoyed the Stanly County YMCA and exercised there at least three times a week.

Peripheral Artery Disease made work difficult, then eventually impossible, when she had one leg amputated. Many people who knew her were afraid she would never bounce back but, boy were they wrong! Physically and scientifically, the odds were against her.

Betty did not let her disadvantage stop her from continuing to live a full and satisfying life, daily enriched by the thoughts and deeds she shared with others who were less fortunate than she considered herself.

She was an inspiration and a sprit lifter to those around her because of her determination to get the most out of life and to share with others. She was presented the Sally C. Stoker Achievement Award in 2010 sponsored by the Stanly County Family YMCA.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Inez Clayton and Ann Queen and a niece Mary Ethel Clayton.

She is survived by a niece Mary Evelyn Thornburg and nephews Al Henley and William Henley.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stanly and the Uwharrie.
