Mary Ethel Clayton

Mary Ethel Clayton, 65, of Norwood, surrounded by family and friends passed away, Thursday afternoon, February 26, 2015 at her home.  

Funeral services held Saturday, February 28, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Norwood.  

Rev. Doug Hochmuth will officiate and interment will follow in Norview Gardens.  

The family will receive friends prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.  

Mary Ethel was born September 21, 1949 in Stanly County to the late Charlie James and Inez Shankle Clayton.  

She was a graduate of South Stanly High School and was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, where she was an active member of the United Methodist Women and the Merrymakers. 

She was also active in the community with the Norwood Chapter #164, Order of Eastern Star and was a former member of Extension Homemakers, and an active member of VFW, Ladies Auxilary.  

Mary Ethel was last employed with Norwood Yarn Sales with 38 years of service.  

Mary Ethel had many friends whom she shared her love and compassion with.  

She remembered birthdays and anniversaries with cards or goodies.  

Many times she would be seen helping her older friends by taking them to the grocery store and running errands. Mary Ethel was crazy about Elvis Pressley and loved all his music.  

She is survived by her step-mother, Ruth Riggins and her husband, Marshall of Norwood; aunts, Ann “Sissy” Shankle Hendley of Spartanburg, Betty Shankle of Norwood and Helen Clayton of Midland and cousins. 

Memorials may be made to: First United Methodist Church, Norwood, or Hospice of Stanly and Uwharrie.
