Jerry Alan Barnes

Jerry Alan Barnes, 78, of Rockwell, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 13, 2020, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.

He was born June 22, 1942, in Stanly County to the late Cicero and Irene Barnes. Jerry attended Richfield High School and retired from the NC Department of Transportation, working primarily in Cabarrus County. He served his country in the NC National Guard where he served for more than 22 years and retired at the rank of sergeant in 1987. Jerry was former longtime member of Zion United Methodist Church and later attended Rockwell United Methodist Church. He enjoyed surf fishing at Carolina Beach, bass fishing, and traveling throughout the country on bus trips with his wife. Jerry always looked forward to time spent with his family, from their annual beach trips every summer to their family cook outs and celebrations.

Jerry was a kind and loving man who touched all that knew him. He was a man of his word and has left behind a wonderful legacy for his family.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles Barnes and James Barnes; father-in-law and mother-in-law Claude and Mae Eller and brother-in-law, Grady Eller.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Alvyn Eller Barnes; daughter, Renee Brooks and husband, Jeff; son, Stephen Barnes and wife, Sandy; grandchildren, Tyler Brooks and wife, Lela, Hunter Brooks, Katie Barnes and Brack Barnes; great-grandson, Tucker Brooks, all of Rockwell. He is also survived by brother, Kenneth Barnes and wife, Betty, of Gold Hill; sisters-in-law, Frances Barnes of Richfield and Edna Barnes of Reidsville; brothers-in-law, Vance Eller and wife, Betty of Salisbury, Reid Eller and wife, Sue of Richfield, and Max Eller and wife, Linda of Rockwell and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will greet friends and relatives on Monday, December 21, from 12:30 pm to 1:45 pm at Rockwell United Methodist Church.

The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm on Monday, at the church, with Rev. Charles Curtis officiating.

Interment with military graveside rites by the North Carolina National Guard and Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard will take place at the Salisbury National Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 22.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.
