C.L. Morton Jr.

Chapel Hill - C.L. Morton, Jr. died on July 3, at 1:16AM while at UNC Memorial Hospital. Morton was born July 20, 1931, the son of the late Luther and Mary Morton of Albemarle, NC.

He was a 1954 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the UNC Executive Program.

Following college graduation, Morton pursued a 39-year career with the Home Security Life Insurance Company and its successor, The Providian Corporation, and retired as the Senior Administrative Officer of the company's Agency Division. He was a CLU and a Fellow of the Life Office Management Association.

Morton is survived by his wife of 69 years, Nell; his daughter, Deborah Moore, and husband, Barry of Durham. He is also survived by his son Mark and wife, Carolyn of Chapel Hill. Six grandchildren also survive him: Andrea Moore (Mark DiGuiseppi) of Durham, Hannah Moore (Chris Womack) of Chapel Hill, Jonathan Moore (Elanor) of Durham, Mark Morton Jr. (Olivia) of Decatur, Ga., Robert Morton (Michelle) of Chapel Hill and Meghan Morton of Chapel Hill as well as great-granddaughter Fiona Womack of Chapel Hill.

Morton is also survived by his sister Betty Mabry of Albemarle, his sister-in-law Annette Morton of Charlotte, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Stoots and Margaret Hatley, and brother, James R. Morton.

A member of the Binkley Memorial Baptist Church for more than fifty years, he held many church offices including moderator, budget director, treasurer, and financial secretary. He also served as a deacon and church trustee.

A memorial service will be held at the Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church at 2PM on Sunday July 16, 2023.

The family will receive family and friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the church endowment fund or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
