James F. Bame
CLEVELAND - James Fleming Bame, 81, of Cleveland, passed away peacefully at Davis Regional Medical Center Thursday evening, March 20, 2014, after a lengthy illness.
Born on April 16, 1932, in Iredell County, he was the son of the late George Washington and Hilda Gay Fleming Bame. Mr. Bame graduated from Cleveland High School in 1950 and was also a 1958 graduate of the University of South Carolina. He was a brother of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps for two years.
In his early adult years, he helped his father with the family businesses: Bame's General Store, Cotton Gin and Bame's Hotel in Carolina Beach. He also owned and operated Bame's Restaurant in Barber Junction for many years. He later worked for the N.C. Department of Corrections as a superintendent and retired in 1992.
He was a lifetime member of Scotch-Ireland Masonic Temple and was a Shriner. He was also an active member of Cleveland United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men. He served in various positions in the church.
He served on various committees at West Rowan High School, including the school board and announcer for the football games for years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57-1/2 years, Cora Sue Loflin Bame; and an infant son, George David Bame.
Survivors include daughters Lisa Bame (Robert Fraley) of Salisbury, Pam Phillips (Gary) of Cleveland and Jamie Shore (Mark) of Statesville; five granddaughters, Kelly Rodgers (Clint) of Cleveland, Missy Maddix (Sam) of Woodleaf, Megan, Lindsay and Mackenzie Shore of Statesville; two great-grandchildren, Amie and Brayden Rodgers of Cleveland; and special pets, April and Lucy.
A special thanks to his caregivers Heather Evenden, Crystal Trendal and Tim Peters.
Arrangements: Visitation will be held Monday, March 24 from 1-2:30 p.m. with funeral services following at Cleveland United Methodist Church, 11445 Statesville Blvd., Cleveland, NC 27013. The Rev. William Wease and Deaconess Sybil Perrell will officiate. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park, 4125 Franklin Community Center Road, Salisbury, NC 28144. Military rites by the Lyerly Volunteer Honor Guard and masonic rites.
