Gordon Lee Peacock

Gordon Lee Peacock, 80, of Salisbury, entered the Church Triumphant on Tuesday, May 01, 2018, peacefully in arms of his loved ones. Gordon was a man of integrity and honesty. Born August 31, 1937, he was the youngest child of David Lee Peacock and Esther Troutman Peacock Parks. 

A 1955 graduate of Boyden High School and a member of the 1955 State 3A Championship Baseball team. Gordon was very proud that he was coached and mentored by Coach Joe Ferebee. Gordon had a batting average that year of .480.

Gordon was employed for 42 years at the Salisbury Evening Post as the National Wire Editor. He considered himself very fortunate to work along side Jim Brawley, George Rayner, Helen Cheney, Rose Post and his good friend Jim Hurley and many other special friends at the Post. 

Gordon was a avid golfer and played in many tournaments during his life time with a 6 handicap. In the retirement years he played with the GARs and Ted and Tommie.

Every fall Gordon would travel to Cape Lookout and Topsail Beach for coast fishing with family and friends. He enjoyed crappie fishing High Rock Lake at Panther Point. In his retirement he enjoyed raising tomatoes and onions and sharing with family and friends.

Gordon was active in his church, St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He served 12 years as a Youth Adviser, two terms as Chairman of the Church Council, and several terms on the church council, served on the Evangelism Committee, Communion Committee, Property Community and Social Ministry. He was a member of the John's Sunday School Class and the Wednesday night Bible study group. Gordon volunteered many years with the Meals on Wheels program. Gordon made his Via De Cristo in the fall 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Bonnie Peacock Graham. 

Those left to cherish his memory is his wife and best friend, Helen Austin Peacock, whom he married in September 1977, two daughters, Angela Cauble Abernethy (Gene) of Salisbury, Amy Peacock Kirkman (Bobby) of Rockwell, and one son, David Lee Peacock (Berle) of Georgia. Two sisters, Doris Cline of Salisbury, Sylvia Brooks of Alabama. Special granddaughters, Lily Marie Abernethy, Laura Beth Smith and Heather Kirkman. Ten great-grandchildren. Gordon was loved by many special nephews and nieces. Special companion Taz.

Visitation will be on Thursday, May 3, from 2:00 PM to 3:45 PM at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Family Life Center. 

A celebration of life service will follow the visitation at 4:00 PM on Thursday in the church sanctuary conducted by Rev. Gary S. Coble, pastor. Burial with Military Graveside Rites by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the North Carolina National Guard will follow in the church cemetery.

At Gordon's request, in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church.

The family would like to thank Rowan County Hospice and Dr. Chet Amin for the loving and gentle care.
