Friday, March 1, 2013 — Jay Sherwood Harwood, 77, of Albemarle, passed away, Tuesday, February 26, 2013, at his home.

The family received friends at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle on Thursday, February 28, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. At other times they will meet at his home.  

The funeral service will be at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 32056 Herrin Grove Road, Mt. Pleasant, N.C., on Friday, March 1, 2013, at 2 p.m. There will be  a 30 minute state. The Rev. Ervin H. Houser will officiate and the burial will follow at Stanly Gardens of Memory, Albemarle.

Born January 9, 1936, in Stanly County, N.C., he is a son of the late Emsley Britton Harwood and the late Dallie Jean Hatley Harwood.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Spence Harwood.

He is survived by his wife, Shelby Jean Harwood of the home; son, Robert Dale Harwood and wife Sheri of Albemarle; daughter, Cathy Lynn Harwood Davis and husband Mike of Haw River; brother, Hal Emsley Harwood of Albemarle; sisters, Betty Jo Harwood Herlocker of Mt. Pleasant and Patricia Harwood Thompson of Locust; grandchildren, Sasha Efird and husband Robert, Nicholas Davis and Natasha Harwood; and his beloved Pekingese, Hollie.

Jay was president of Piedmont Electric and a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant where he served as Chairman of the Board, Board of Trustees, treasurer of United Methodist Men’s Club, a choir member, cook, and a handyman who made sure things worked. He was a vigilant steward of his faith who often went unrecognized. He was also treasurer of Stanly County Home Builder’s Association.

Memorials may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 32056 Herrin Grove Road, Mt. Pleasant; or Hospice of Stanly County.
