Elizabeth Petrea Cauble

WEST COLUMBIA - Elizabeth Petrea Cauble, widow of Bishop Herman W. Cauble, ELCA, died Saturday, November 6, 2010, in West Columbia, SC at the age of 89. Born in Uniontown, Maryland, she was the daughter of the Reverend Dr. Bruner Eugene Petrea and Anna Umberger Petrea. She was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC and the School of Sacred Music, Union Theological Seminary, New York City.

A resident of Columbia for over sixty years, she taught piano in the Preparatory Department at Columbia College and privately in her home. She was a recitalist on programs of the Columbia chapter of the American Guild of Organists where she served as a member and officer. She was a past president of the Columbia Music Teachers Association, a tireless worker for the Columbia Symphony League and the first president of the Morning Music Club where a scholarship was established in her name.

Mrs. Cauble served as a parish worker and musician in Burlington, NC, was elected President of Lutheran Church Women of the SC Synod and served as chair of the Joint Planning Commission for women in the 1968 merger of the national church. She also served as President of the Auxiliary of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. As a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church of Columbia for 44 years, she served several terms on the Church Council and was the first woman to serve as Chairperson. She was on the planning committee for the new sanctuary of St. Andrew’s and helped design the Schanz organ.

Mrs. Cauble is survived by her four children, Herman W., Cauble, Jr. (Barbara) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Charles E. Cauble (Sheryl) of Greenville and Isle of Palms, SC., Cynthia C. Perry of Clinton, SC, and Susandale C. Brown (John) of Irmo, SC; eight grandchildren, Christy Cauble, Angie Brokaw, Drew Perry, Catherine Perry, Amy Cauble, Ashley Cauble, Norabeth Brown and Anna Brown; and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Zachary and Nathan. She is pre-deceased by her husband of 66 years, and by a sister, Margaret Guenther.

The family wishes to extend gratitude to Bishop and Mrs. Cauble’s loving caregivers, Rosland Thompson, Hattie Vinson, Geneva James, Esther Love, Tina Kinlaw, Cynthia Esau and Ruth Johnson.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC. Visitation with the family will immediately follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church or to the Elizabeth P. Cauble Music Scholarship.
