ROCKWELL - Oscar Reed Yates, age 81, of Rockwell died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at Rowan Regional Medical Center in Salisbury after a brief illness. He was born August 27, 1926, in China Grove to Feldman Yates Sr. and Viola Mae Cress.

He attended Kluttz-Menius and Faith Schools. At age 18 he entered the the U.S. Navy on Sept. 14, 1944, and was discharged on June 4, 1946. He served during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific. He served on the USS LST 1087 and the USS LST 730 stationed in Norfolk, Va. He rejoined the U.S. Navy on June 24, 1948, and was stationed at the U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba until June 20, 1952.

On Dec. 1, 1950, he married Marianne Ophelia Rattz, who preceded him in death on July 26, 1977.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and brother, Leenard Yates and Harold Sharkey Yates.

Surviving are his loving "girls" and daughters, Terry (Jim) Gandy of Concord and Joyce Yates of Granite Quarry; his adored grandchildren, Jeremy (Emily) Jackson of Marietta, Ga., Wynne (Aaron) Youngblood of Salisbury, Kyle Heno, Sea Heno, Winter Heno and Seth Heno, all of Granite Quarry; his sisters, Odessa Peeler of Granite Quarry and Lucille (Bill) Burleson of Salisbury; and a brother, Feldman (Dianne) Yates, Jr. of Salisbury. Also surviving is his faithful companion and dog, Cricket.

Oscar retired from Bendix Corporation in Salisbury.

He has been a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church since August 16, 1953

Visitation: 7:00-8:30 tonight at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Funeral Services: 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by Rev. David Ridenhour, Pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by the Rowan County Military Honor Guard.

Memorials: St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Cemetery Fund.
