ROCKWELL - Elsie Brown Whirlow, 89, of Rockwell, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.
Elsie was born Feb. 9, 1924, in Rowan County, daughter of the late Lester L. and Dora Mae Harwood Brown.
Elsie was a 1944 graduate of Rockwell High School. She retired from Cannon Mills in 1986 after 29 years of service. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.
Elsie loved animals and gardening and enjoyed spending time outdoors.
In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Milton "Whitey" Whirlow, on July 4, 1990; brothers Frank, Junior and George Brown; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Wallace.
Elsie is survived by her son, George H. Whirlow of Rockwell; and her daughter, Jo Ann Wallace and husband David Wallace of Rockwell.
Service: There will be a Funeral Service Thursday, Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Ed Harper. Burial will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens.
Visitation: The family will receive friends Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Powles Funeral Home.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Humane Society of Rowan County; or St. James Lutheran Church; or Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care.
Powles Funeral Home of Rockwell is assisting the Whirlow family.
