SALISBURY - Mr. David "Clifford" Shepherd, 88, of Salisbury, left his earthly family to be with his Lord and Savior Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010, at his residence.

Clifford was born May 7, 1922, in Rowan County, the son of the late David Wesley Shepherd and Maggie Trexler Shepherd. Clifford was a graduate of Rockwell High School and a life-member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Clifford served during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the 120th Infantry Division. He received the Purple Heart, Silver Star and the Bronze Star while in combat in the areas of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.

Clifford retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation as a motor grader operator with 43 years of service. Owner and operator of Shady Circle Mobile Home Park, for the last 25 years, Clifford resided at High Rock Lake. While confined to a wheelchair for the last eight years, he lived his life to the fullest, enjoying boating, fishing, gardening, his family and neighbors. He was always known as a kind, caring and generous person.

In addition to his parents, Clifford was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Miller.

Survivors include his wife, the love of his life for 65 years, Ruth Fowler Shepherd; daughter Donnell Shepherd Miller and husband Harold of Salisbury; sons David A. Shepherd and wife Melinda of Gloucester, Va., Danny Shepherd and wife Carol of Salisbury; brothers Robert Shepherd of Salisbury and Roy Shepherd of Reeds; grandchildren Monica Miller Harris, Megan Miller, Angie S. Strode, Adam Shepherd, Kristina Shepherd, Donelle Shepherd and Simon Shepherd; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Funeral Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by Rev. Gary Coble, pastor.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with Military Graveside Rites by the N.C. National Guard and the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
