WOODLEAF - William "Bill" Irvin Kesler, 89, of Woodleaf, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2008, at his residence.

Bill was born Nov. 21, 1918, in Rowan County, the son of the late Henry and JV Goodman Kesler. Bill was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School, a 1944 graduate of Urbana University of Illinois, a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy for two years where he was a signalman on a Malabar ship.

Bill was a member of Union Lutheran Church, Salisbury, before moving his membership to South River United Methodist Church, Woodleaf. He was self-employed as a Candy and Notions Salesman for 37 years, coached Babe Ruth Baseball for 30 years, was a member of the Salisbury Moose Lodge 900 for 30 years, called Bingo for the seniors at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center and was an avid Braves baseball fan.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death in 1987 by his first wife, Pearl Lyerly Kesler, whom he married in 1940; nine brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include wife Hazel Williams Steele Kesler, whom he married in 1995; sons William Jerrell Kesler and wife Janet of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; stepson Joel Steele and wife Shelby of Woodleaf; stepdaughters Rene S. Atwell and husband Barry of Woodleaf, Tina S. Aistrop and husband Mike of Woodleaf; grandson William Todd Kesler of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; granddaughter Alicia Kesler Long and husband Jack of Arkansas; step-granddaughters Angela S. Campbell and husband George of Statesville, Erin A. Thompson and husband McLean of Whiteville, Adrienne A. Leach and husband Todd of Winston-Salem, Jessica A. Viera and husband Lelin of Woodleaf, April Steele, Tiffany Aistrop and Ashley Aistrop of Woodleaf; great-grandson Jordon Ramsey Euart of Salisbury; great-granddaughter, Melinda Ann Long of Arkansas; step-great-grandson Tripp Thompson of Whiteville; step-great-granddaughters Campbell Thompson of Whiteville, Cecilia Grace Viera of Woodleaf and Natalie Grace Campbell of Statesville.

Visitations: 4-5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell; and 1-1:45 p.m. Sunday, April 27 at South River United Methodist Church.

Funeral Service: 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27 at South River United Methodist Church, Woodleaf, conducted by Rev. Billy Towery, Pastor, and Rev. Shirley Jones. Burial will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell, with Military Graveside Rites by the North Carolina Army National Guard and the Rowan County Military Honor Guard.

Memorials: Memorials may be made to Hospice of Iredell County, or South River United Methodist Church.
