Thursday, October 21, 2010 — John DeBerry Harwood, Jr., age 88, of 28960 Pole Running Road, Mt. Pleasant, N.C., passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at his home.

He was born May 14, 1922 in Stanly County to the late John D. Harwood Sr., and Emma Florence Hatley Harwood. Brothers, Fred and Hugh Harwood and three sisters, Mary Morton, Elsie Hahn, and Bess Harkey preceded him in death.

He was a life long farmer and retired in maintenance from Central Cabarrus High School and Mt. Pleasant Elementary. He collected antique clocks and took pleasure in repairing clocks for friends. A life long member of Oak Grove UMC, he served in many capacities including chairperson of the cemetery committee where he was active in restoring the old gravesites.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years Audrey Louise Furr Harwood of the home; sons, Charles D. Harwood and wife Jane F. of Stanfield and John Malcolm Harwood of Mt. Pleasant; daughter, Frances Harwood Youngblood and husband Lee of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Ashley Harwood, Ryan Youngblood, Emily Youngblood Dionne; great-grandchildren, Ashton Dionne and Jaden Moore.

Visitation will be Friday, October 22, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle. Funeral service will be Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, where he was a member, with Rev. Ervin Houser to officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will meet at his home.

Memorials may be made to Oak Grove United Methodist Church, and Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County.
