Notes for Columbus Lee Efird
Captain Columbus Lee Efird

Captain Columbus Lee Efird of Carolina beach NC passed away July 21, 2010. He was born in Albemarle, North Carolina on February 3, 1925 to parents Lilly and William Titus Efird. Columbus was the twelve of thirteen brothers and sisters all deceased. His family owned property on Cape Fear Blvd., Carolina Beach in the 20's and the family spent the summers here. Working as a lifeguard in the 40's he met and married Pat Efird. They also bought property and established Columbus Motel, which they ran until 1972 and owned an Amoco gas station on the corner of Cape Fear and 421. He loved to fish and was a charter boat captain for over 50 years; he holds record catches for inshore fishing. Anybody that ever fished with him will never forget his or her experience! Capt. Colombo served as a volunteer fireman for 25 years and worked as an auxiliary police officer and helped establish the CB library and served on the Planning Department for the town. He always did anything for this town that he could, he truly loved Carolina Beach. He was a Deacon in the Presbyterian Church and coached the girl's basketball team for 5 years never loosing a game. Columbus was a one of a kind character and had an extremely wonderful sense of humor; there are a lot of Columbus stories!!!

Surviving are his children Susan Efird, Toni Efird Lyons (Frank), Sarah Efird; Grandson Sean Panno and Pat Efird all living in Carolina Beach. He has many nieces and nephews, and one faithful dog Seabo.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 1, 2010 from 4:00 -7:00 pm at the American Legion, Carolina Beach.

The family asks that donations in Columbus's memory be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401 or to Carolina Beach Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 1209 N. Lake Park Blvd., Carolina Beach, NC 28428. We would like to praise hospice for all the caring work they do. Thanks to Judy Sherm and all our friends for their help and support.
