Mae Porter Deal

SALISBURY - Mae Burgess Porter Deal, died Monday, April 5, 2010, at Autumn Care of Salisbury, where she had made her home for the past four years.

Ms. Deal was born April 30, 1922, in Albemarle to the late Jonah Burgess of Laurinburg and the late Elizabeth Sanders Burgess Eudy Lentz of Salisbury.

Educated in Rowan County schools, Ms. Deal was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Salisbury. She had worked for Rowan Mills, Cartex Mills and later became a private duty Patient Helper/Caregiver working at Rowan Regional Medical Center and in private homes.

Her work as a Private Duty Caregiver was a very rewarding for Mae. She was always so kind, and patient with everyone. It was definitely "her calling" to care for the sick. Everyone she worked for loved her.

Ms. Deal loved nothing more than taking care of her family, her home and enjoying her grandchildren. She also loved gardening, growing flowers and sewing.

Ms. Deal was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Thaddeus Porter, on Jan. 16, 1996. Her second husband, Charlie Thomas "Buck" Deal, died in November 2000. Also preceding her in death were brothers Spurgeon Eudy of Canton, Ohio, and Spencer Lloyd Burgess of South Carolina.

Survivors are one daughter, Shirley Porter Hoosier of Salisbury; stepchildren Rev. Donald Deal, (Nancy) Mount Pleasant, Jimmie Deal (Jean), Faith, Peggy Hall (Max), Hendersonville, Libby McLean (Mark) Walhalla, S.C., and Linda Beaver (Jerry), Faith; one brother, Henry Thomas (H.T.) Eudy of Cayce, S.C.; grandchildren Melissa Hoosier Drye (Scott), Faith, Michael Porter Hoosier (Annette), Salisbury, and David Alan Hoosier (Melissa) of Salisbury; great-grandchildren Austin Hoosier, Abbey Hoosier, Dekerius Hoosier, Matthew Hoosier, Alan Hoosier of Salisbury, Kaitlin and McKenzie Drye of Faith; and two foster grandchildren, Isaac Godfrey and Lindsey Hoosier of Salisbury.

Also surviving are step-grandchildren Brenda Hamm (Donald) of Durham, Melvin Deal (Heidi), Alan Deal (Karen) of Hickory, and David Deal (Beth) of Concord, Keith Deal (Summer) of Faith, Maxie Hall of Garner, Angie Barger (Lee) of Hillsborough, Michael (Virginia) McLean, of York, S.C., Anna McLean, Concord, and Mitzi McLean of Winston-Salem; and numerous step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is sister-in-law Juanita (Spurgeon) Eudy of Canton, Ohio; and numerous nephews, nieces and step-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of her daughter, Shirley Porter Hoosier, 406 Porter Road, Salisbury.

Visitation: The visitation will be at Summersett Funeral Home Tuesday (April 6) from 6-8 p.m.

Service: Funeral service conducted by Rev. William Ketchie will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday (April 7) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Mrs. Deal will lie in state for 30 minutes before the funeral service. Burial will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery following the service.

Memorials: May be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Building Improvement Fund; Abundant Living Day Care; or Rowan County Senior Services.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Autumn Care of Salisbury for their love and care given to our loved one. Also to the staff of Abundant Living Day Care, where she attended prior to her move to Autumn Care. Also, thanks to Dr. Ott of Rowan Family Physicians and to Dr. Robert McNeil.
