Stewart Cuthrell

SALISBURY - Henry Stewart Cuthrell Jr., 82, of Salisbury, died Thursday, July 12, 2007, at Autumn Care Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 21, 1924, in Salisbury, Mr. Cuthrell was the son of the late Henry Stewart Cuthrell Sr. and Mary Ellen Fraley Cuthrell. He received his education in Salisbury City and Woodleaf schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II, enlisting at the age of 17, where he served in the Pacific Theatre on the USS Hazelwood and USS Missouri. He retired in 1981 as a Nursing Assistant from W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center with 30 years of service.

A member of First United Church of Christ, he was also an active member of the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342, charter member of the Salisbury Bass Masters, and DIFF Club. He was an avid fisherman, having fished in the lakes of North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. He especially enjoyed his fishing time with members of the DIFF Club at the Outer Banks at Cape Lookout. He was also a Master Gardener.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Marie Barringer Cuthrell, whom he married Nov. 25, 1962; sisters-in-law Miream Barringer Clary (Jim), Catherine Barringer Kimball (John), and Mary Ruth Holshouser Barringer; and a nephew, James Brown (Jay) Clary, who was reared in the home. Other survivors include a niece, Libby K. Holman (Lee); nephews Tommy Kimball (Carlene), Alan Barringer (Jennie), Kim Barringer (Connie); and a number of cousins and special friends.

Visitation and Service: The visitation will be from 1-1:45 pm today at Summersett Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm at U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard location, officiated by the Rev. Mike Childress, pastor of First United Church of Christ.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Church of Christ, Salisbury; Rowan Regional Home Health & Hospice; or Rowan County Relay for Life, c/o Freeda Martin, 7789 Stokes Ferry Road.

The Cuthrell family wishes to thank Rowan Regional Home Health & Hospice, Dr. Black, Dr. Wimmer, Dr. Brinkley and staff; nurses Karen Shelton, Matt, Mickey and Kelly for their care and kindness shown to Stewart during his fight with cancer.
