Edith Maryellen Eury Smith, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2018, at Levine and Dickson Hospice House in Charlotte.

A celebration of Edith’s life will begin at 3 p.m. Monday, August 13, at her church, Red Cross Baptist, with the Rev. Jesse Herring and the Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Smith family will receive friends beginning at 2pm at the church.

Edith was born on February 17, 1926, to Curtis Eury and Laura Hatley Eury. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, John S. Smith, who died in 2008; a sister, Dot Kiker; and three brothers, Joe Eury, Leroy Eury and Marvin Eury.

A high school graduate, Edith worked outside the home in the hey-day of the hosiery industry. Throughout her life, she enjoyed quilting, sewing, growing and arranging flowers, and a variety of church activities including Sunbeams, Girls in Action (GAs) and Acteens, both as a participant in her younger years and as a leader and mentor to those who came behind her. She also served as the Sunday school secretary.

Edith is survived by one daughter, Beverly S. Deal (Roger); a grandson, Brad Deal; a great-grandson, Jonathan Deal; two sisters, Faye E. Hurlocker, and Maye E. Tomkinson (James); and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Burris.

Edith’s family expresses special thanks to Jennifer Ames for her professional and compassionate care of Edith and also, Sylvia Pittman of Hospice of Charlotte and all the staff at Levine and Dickson Hospice House.
