O.D. Hatley

O.D. Hatley, 84, of 24151 A. Ridgecrest Road, Locust, loving husband, Daddy, Paw Paw and friend to all, died at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Stanly Manor.

His funeral will be at 7 p.m. Friday, March 27, at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel, with The Rev. Ervin Houser officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Albemarle-Stanly County DAV.

Visitation will be at Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 27.

Born March 27, 1924, in Stanly County, he was the son of the late Gurnie Earnest and Lula Hatley and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was self-employed as a vegetable farmer and attended Oak Grove U.M.C.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Hatley, and four sisters, Eldora Hatley, Rachel Burleson, Francis Lowder and Elaine Frick.

He is survived by his wife, Mary "Susie" Jewell (Smith) Hatley of Locust; a son, David Hatley and wife, Pam, of Charlotte; two daughters, Gwendolyn Waldrup and husband, Jim, of Spartanburg, S.C. and Wendy Helms and husband, Irving, of Locust; a brother, Gurnie Earnest Hatley, Jr. of Albemarle; three sisters, Marie Holt, Jewell Joyner, and Libby Eudy, all of Albemarle; 10 grandchildren and 14 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
