Gaynell H. Shafer

Mrs. Gaynell Shafer died Thursday, April 10, 2014 in Salisbury, North Carolina at her home. She was born in Rowan County March 25, 1946, the daughter of the late Raymond R. Haynes and Molly S. Haynes.

Gaynell was preceeded in death by her beloved husband Dr. Irving “Doc” Shafer, Jr. She leaves behind her daughters Angela Mathis of Franklin, NC, Trina Millsaps (Jeff) of Statesville, NC, stepson Irving “Chip” Shafer III (Terry) of Ft Pierce, FL, Melissa Manos(Michael) of Shaker Heights, OH, Georgia Vaughn (Rick) Alpharetta, GA, Phillip Lowman special nephew, Salisbury, NC and eleven cherished grandchildren.

Gaynell earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Lenoir Rhyne College in Early Childhood Education. She also completed her cosmetology degree where she was owner and operator of Piedmont Hair Care on West Broad Street in Statesville. While being a business owner, she was involved in the community as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Transplant Garden Club and a member of Rose Chapel United Methodist Church.

Upon retirement, Gaynell moved to Salisbury with her best friend and husband “Doc” Shafer. Hunting became their passion and pastime. They hunted the duck blinds of Currituck, NC and the dove fields of Central and South America. They enjoyed hunting deer and turkey at their home in the low country of South Carolina. Gaynell was an ardent collector and reader of cookbooks and also enjoyed crossword puzzles. She found great pleasure in cooking for her grandchildren and sharing her love for hunting with them as well.

Gaynell is also survived by a brother, Bill Haynes (Paula), sisters Colleen Hoffner, Janice Lentz, Peggy Deal (Glenn) and Sandra Frick. She was preceeded in death by brothers Raymond Haynes Jr, Anderson “Bud” Haynes, Joe Ray Haynes and sisters Sarah Frances Haynes and Wilma Haynes.

Family will be receiving friends and family during a visitation at Summersett Funeral Home on Saturday, April 12th from 6-8 pm. The funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 13th at 4:00 pm at Summersett Memorial Chapel.

Many thanks go to sister Peggy Deal, family friends, Janie Bryan, Eva Chambers and Rowan Hospice for their loving compassion and care that they so unselfishly gave during her final days.

Gaynell’s favorite charity was an animal rescue of predominantly stray, abused and neglected dogs. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to this charity supported and operated by Dr. Frances Mills, Hampton, SC.
