Rev. Cecil Kenneth Herrin

The Rev. Cecil Kenneth Herrin, 80, of 1023 Radio Rd., Statesville, NC, passed to his eternal life on Saturday, May 14, 2005, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

He was born October 11, 1924, in Salisbury, NC, and was the son of the late Daniel Monroe Herrin and Bernice Lowder Herrin. Following his graduation from China Grove High School in 1941, he served with the US Army for four years during World War II in the European Theatre. He was a 1949 graduate of Catawba College and entered the Southern Baptist Seminary at Louisville, KY and earned a bachelor of Divinity Degree in 1952, followed by a Master of Divinity degree in 1970. While at the Seminary, he roomed with his good friend, the Rev. Eugene Benjamin Hager of Statesville who died April 20, 2005.

The Rev. Herrin came to Statesville in 1952 as an associate minister at Western Avenue Baptist Church. He married on June 19, 1953, to Vernelle Blevins Herrin, who survives.

In 1954 he became the pastor of Beulah Baptist Church, serving 12 years. In 1966, he became the pastor of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands, VA., where he served for 22 years except for one year at Faith Baptist Church, Salisbury, NC. He served on the General Board of the Virginia Baptist Convention and also as a Trustee of the Baptist State Newspaper, The Herald.

In 1990, he retired back to Statesville and for a number of years served as an interim pastor, including five years at Taylor Springs Baptist Church, Union Grove, NC. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Statesville.

In addition to his wife of 51 years, the Rev. Herrin is survived by two sons, Roger Kenneth Herrin of Seattle, Washington, and Dean Andrew Herrin and wife Sarah of Frederick, Maryland; one granddaughter, Emma Heald Herrin of Frederick, Maryland, along with one brother, Gerald Herrin and wife, Bonnie, of Faith, NC, three sisters, Doris Rota and husband John, New Castle, Washington, Peggy Rary, of Salisbury, NC and Joyce Clark, Germonton, NC. A number of nieces, nephews great nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Rev. Herrin will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at First Baptist Church of Statesville with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Porter, the Rev. Dr. Jack Causey, the Rev. Ray Benfield and the Rev. Lee Kidd officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery for the family prior to the services.

The family will visit with friends following the services.
