Earle William Lingle, Sr.

GRANITE QUARRY - Earle William Lingle Sr., 83, of Granite Quarry, died Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at Genesis Eldercare of Salisbury.

Born July 10, 1923, in Rowan County, Mr. Lingle was the son of the late Charles T. Lingle and Minnie Frick Lingle. He was a 1941 graduate of Granite Quarry High School. He worked for more than 40 years with W.F. Brinkley & Son as a superintendent.

A member of Wittenburg Lutheran Church, he was a former Church Councilman. He was a member of the Livengood-Peeler-Wood American Legion Post 448, where he was a member for 50 years and was Past Commander. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps., 8th Air Force, and flew 52 combat missions as a tail-gunner in a B-24. Mr. Lingle was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service medal with four Bronze Stars, one Overseas Service Bar, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal, and the European Theater Operations Ribbon.

Mr. Lingle played American Legion Baseball for two years and played semi-pro baseball with the Yadkin Valley League until the late 1950s.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Faye Parrish Lingle, in 1995.

Surviving are sons Tony A. Helms and wife Judy of Salisbury, Earle "Buddy" W. Lingle Jr. and wife Deborah Bian-Lingle of Columbia, S.C.; daughter Tonita Helms McEwen and husband Bill of Wilmington; brother Harold C. Lingle of Spencer; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Wittenberg Lutheran Church Cemetery, Granite Quarry, conducted by the Rev. Tom F. Cogan, pastor, and the Rev. Jeff Lingle, pastor of Epiphany Lutheran Church, Rock Hill, S.C. A memorial service will follow the graveside and be held at Wittenberg Lutheran Church. Honorary pallbearers, who are members of the Livengood-Peeler-Wood American Legion Post 448, and his friends will be seated in a group at the church.

Visitation: Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell. The family will be at the residence the remainder of the time.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Wittenberg Lutheran Church, c/o David Lohr Sunday School Class; or Livengood-Peeler-Wood American Legion Post 448; or to charity of donor's Choice.
