Larry Edward Burwell

STATESVILLE - Larry Edward Burwell, 71, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at his home following a multi-year battle with cancer.

Born June 22, 1938, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Fred H. and Mary Lea Snyder Burwell. He attended Granite Quarry School, owned and operated the John Deere dealership, which started in Salisbury. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in both Europe and the Middle East.

Mr. Burwell was a member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church in Granite Quarry, a long-time member of the American Legion and served as an officer of the American Legion baseball commission. He also served in the Jaycees, was a 32nd degree Mason, and a member of the Rowan Shrine Club. He greatly enjoyed his time traveling in his RV and spending time with the Holiday Rambler RV club, who he considered his second family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Margalene Cartner Burwell.

Survivors include his wife, Polly Bergandine Burwell; sons, Keith Burwell and his wife Susan Burwell of Toledo, Ohio, Dean Burwell and his fiance Amy Schwoeble of Belmont; daughter, Teresa Jelen and her husband Ricky Jelen of Concord; sister, Shelby Ritchie of Rockwell; step-daughter, Teresa Campbell and husband David Campbell of Statesville; step-son, Steve Bergandine and wife Patti Bergandine of Statesville; and seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services & Visitation: Service celebrating Mr. Burwell's life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at The Powles Funeral Home Chapel, 913 W. Main St., Rockwell, with the Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church where Mr. Burwell attended. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for three hours prior to the service and burial will follow in Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC; or Shriner's Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL; or the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Avenue, 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT.
