KANNAPOLIS - William Earl "Bill" Peeler, 90, of Kannapolis, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, at his home.

A lifetime resident of Kannapolis, he was born Jan. 10, 1919, in Cabarrus County, the son of the late Harvey Jeremiah Peeler and the late Pattie Kirk Peeler.

After graduating from Catawba College, he went to work in 1940 in the office of Cannon Mills and retired in 1984. He was active at St. John's United Church of Christ, having served as a Deacon, member of the choir and on the worship committee.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for three years, half of which were spent in the European Theater. He was a member of the 10th Armored Infantry Division during the invasion.

Until a few years ago, he was active in the Henry D. Grimes Y's Men's Club having served as president. Twice he received the Y's Man of the Year award; and when he was editor of the club's "Grit of Grimes," the bulletin was given national honors. The club placed his name in the "Golden Book" of outstanding members at the International Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Della Peeler Myers; and four brothers, Harvey Peeler, Shuford Peeler, Eugene Peeler and H.J. "Hie" Peeler. He was also preceded in death by a very special friend, Don Anderson, in 2009.

He is survived by a brother, James Peeler of Statesville; a sister, Betty Sue Shiefer of Boynton Beach, Fla.; nieces and nephews Barbara Gillon, Jerry Myers, Shuford Peeler Jr., Nancy Konyha, Tippy Peeler, Judy Coggins, Rick Glass, Cathy McGoldrick, Chuck Glass and Jim Glass.

Also surviving him are a special friend, Jane Anderson, Don Anderson's wife, and their son and daughter, who were his godchildren, Donna Anderson Craft and her sons, William and Ryan and grandsons Tanner, Cameron and Rylan, and Jeff Anderson and his wife, Karen, and their son, Jacob.

Service: Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Kannapolis officiated by Dr. Warren Casiday. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in China Grove.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Whitley's Funeral Home.

Memorials: May be made to St. John's United Church of Christ, Kannapolis.
