SALISBURY - L.A. Johnson, 81, of Salisbury, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Johnson was born Jan. 8, 1928, in Rowan County, son of the late Kenneth King Johnson and Jessie Burris.

He attended Rowan County schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was employed as a shipping clerk for Pilot Freight in Charlotte. He was of the Baptist faith and loved fishing, flowers and his yard work.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Johnson.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty Louise Holshouser Johnson, whom he married Feb. 8, 1948; sons Mr. Michael Johnson and wife Mary of Salisbury, Mr. Larry Johnson and wife Mary of Salisbury, Mr. Kenneth Johnson and wife Susie of Rockwell; daughters Mrs. Wanda Hawks and husband Rebel Lowe of Salisbury, Mrs. Teresa Horne and husband Nelson of Salisbury; brothers Mr. Delmar Johnson of Rockwell, Mr. Ray Johnson, Mr. Teddy Johnson and Mr. Jerry Johnson of China Grove, Mr. Gene Johnson of Marrietta, Ga.; sisters Mrs. Marlene Horton of Kannapolis and Mrs. Janice Higgins of Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Service: The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Powles Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Delmar Johnson. Burial will follow at Brookhill Memorial Gardens in Rockwell. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the North Carolina National Guard and Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at Powles Funeral Home from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Memorials: May be made to Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice.
