Clay Wilburn Cozart

SALISBURY - Clay Wilburn Cozart, 85, of Salisbury, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Cozart was born Sept. 7, 1923, in Rowan County, the son of the late William Edgar Cozart and Sophia Cauble Cozart. He graduated from Rockwell High School in 1942 and worked at the VA Medical Center for over 30 years.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Sunday School Class 4, Men in Mission and Friendship Group. He was a former member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church for 52 years, where he served as superintendent and teacher of the Adult Sunday School Department, member of the Church Council, communion usher and a life-member of Lutheran Men in Mission and the Southern Seminary Auxiliary. He organized St. Peter's Boy Scout Troop and was Scoutmaster for many years.

Clay was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in the 737th Tank Battalion in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe and served in Patton's 3rd Army. He received the Eamet Campaign Medal with five Bronze Service Stars and the Bronze Star Medal.

Clay loved to share his war stories with family and friends. He told his family that a chaplain said to always repeat the 23rd Psalm when you are afraid. Clay said that when in danger, he would say it over and over again and was given the strength to do what he had been trained to do.

Clay married his high school sweetheart, Rebecca Brown, on Aug. 29, 1945, after he returned home from World War II.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Cozart was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Rebecca Brown Cozart, on Dec. 4, 2006; and brothers C.A. (Dolly), Homer, Cardell and Vern Cozart.
