GRANITE QUARRY - Mr. George Alexander Peeler, 88, of Granite Quarry, passed away Nov. 24, 2011, at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.

He was born May 3, 1923, in Rowan County, son of the late Hoy Alexander Peeler and Gertrude Miller Peeler. Educated in Granite Quarry schools, Mr. Peeler served during World War II in the U.S. Army. He retired after 50 years with North Carolina Finishing Company as a machine operator. He also retired as a Granite Quarry volunteer fireman.

He was a member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church and the David Lohr Sunday School Class. As long as his health permitted he was very active in his church, being caretaker of the church cemetery for over 30 years.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening and his tractor. He was a charter member of Livengood-Peeler-Wood American Legion Post 448.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mrs. Maude Wilhelm Peeler; brother Ray Peeler; and sisters Katherine Miller Peeler, Margaret Bratton, Helen Peeler and Mary Alice Troutman.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mildred Kerns Peeler, who he married June 16, 1945; one son, George David Peeler and wife Jerri of Salisbury; one daughter, Mrs. Janet Thomas and husband Rick of Bowling Green, Ky. Mr. Peeler is also survived by two brothers, Hoy Peeler, Jr. of Salisbury and the Rev. James L. Peeler and wife Carolyn of Thomasville; two sisters, Mary Ida Fortune of Kannapolis and Sue Lyerly and husband Joe of Granite Quarry; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Service: The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Wittenberg Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Thomas F. Cogan. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the N.C. Honor Guard and the Rowan County Honor Guard.

Visitation: The Family will receive friends at Powles Funeral Home Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
