Mark Allen Lyerly, 81, died Saturday (June 9, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health.

Born Aug. 7, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Lyerly was the son of the late Charles Alexander and Sallie Miller Lyerly. He was educated in the Rowan County schools. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he had retired from Duke Power, where he had served as construction superintendent for 36 years.

He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post and the Veterans of Foreign War. He served as an auxiliary police officer.

His first wife, Alice Helms Lyerly, died in 1956, and his second wife, Catherine O. Lyerly, died Dec. 7, 1998.

Survivors include son Steve Stallings, Salisbury; daughters Cathy Spiegel, Concord, Pam Agner, Asheville, Debbie Mendez, Belmont, and Marsha Lyerly, Salisbury; brother Herman Lyerly, Salisbury; sisters Alma Weaver, Margaret Alsobrooks and Ruth Lyerly, all of Salisbury, and Ethel Peeler, Faith; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Doug Hefner and the Rev. Lori Hefner, co-pastors. Burial, church cemetery, with military rites by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 3 to 4:30 p.m. today at Lyerly Funeral Home.
