Notes for Hazel Pearl Lingle
Hazel Lingle Canup

SALISBURY - Hazel Pearl Lingle Canup, age 87, of Salisbury, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at The Lutheran Home of Salisbury.

Born Nov. 27, 1921, she was the seventh of ten children born to Mary Lyerly Lingle and John A. Lingle.

She was educated in the Rowan County public schools and graduated from Granite Quarry High School.

On Oct. 4, 1942, she married Luther Paul Canup. Except for the nine months they lived in La. and Tex. during his military service, she lived all of her life in Rowan County.

Hazel was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. During her earlier years, she taught Sunday School and was active in the Woman of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. She was a life member of the Auxiliary of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.

Upon her husband's return from active duty in World War II, Hazel became a life member of American Ex-prisoners of War Auxiliary. She was a charter member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 448 in Granite Quarry. She retired from Norman's of Salisbury in 1985.

Hazel was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law. Always a lover of the outdoors, she was happiest in her yard where her vegetable garden and her seasonal flowers were a source of pride and pleasure. Her yard was always immaculately groomed, a chore she welcomed and enjoyed sharing with her husband.

Hazel is survived by her loving husband, Luther Paul Canup, with whom she recently celebrated 67 years of marriage; three sons, Johnny Canup and wife, Brenda of Kinston, Dale Canup and wife, Jan of Fayetteville and Danny Canup and wife, Elaine of Salisbury; five grandchildren, Laura Canup Hughes and husband, Steve of Charlotte, Lesley Canup Corbin and husband, Brian of Fort Hood, Tex., Travis Canup of Fayetteville and Christa and Renee Canup of Salisbury; four great-grandchildren, Tristan and Dale Robert Corbin and Kate and Isaac Hughes; brother, Hoover Lingle of The Lutheran Home; brother-in-laws, Howard Bernhardt of Granite Quarry and Claude Hampton of Salisbury; and sister-in-law, Kate Lingle of Granite Quarry.
