Melvin R. Shaver

RICHFIELD - Melvin R. Shaver, 84, of Richfield, passed away at his home on Friday, April 24, 2009.

Born Jan. 14, 1925, in Rowan County, Mr. Shaver was a son of the late William Neely and Dora Thompson Shaver. He started his education at Ponds School, and finished it at Shaver School.

Melvin retired from Carolina Maid in 1999, and then worked part-time one day a week for Cline's Antiques. A member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church for over 50 years, he enjoyed wood working in his shop, and working on chainsaws.

In addition to his parents, Melvin is preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Shaver.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Mrs. Ruth Goodman Shaver, whom he married on November 29, 1952; a son, Ralph Wayne Shaver and wife Paula of Richfield, and a grandson, Ralph Wayne Shaver, Jr. also of Richfield.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, conducted by Pastor David Ridenhour, with Dr. Benny L. Vickrey assisting. Mr. Shaver will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation: The family will receive friends on Monday, April 27, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Powles Funeral Home.

Memorials: In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

Powles Funeral Home of Rockwell is assisting the Shaver family.
