Joseph "Calvin" Shaver

Mr. Joseph "Calvin" Shaver, 87, of Gold Hill, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury. He was born October 15, 1927, in Rowan County to the late Adam Franklin Shaver and Lillie Mae Arey Shaver.

Mr. Shaver was a graduate of Rockwell High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was a Rural Mail Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1990 after more than 28 years.

A member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Mr. Shaver was active with Lutheran Men in Mission and was a former Scout Master, having received the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of Miller-Russell American Legion Post # 112 and was one of the founding members of Liberty Volunteer Fire Department. Calvin worked with the Rowan County American Legion Baseball Team selling half & half tickets at home games. Calvin also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and gardening.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Addie Rattz Shaver; brothers, Daniel, Frank, Edd, Irving, and Raymond Shaver; and sisters, Icy Ann Shaver and Mary Lou Drye.

Mr. Shaver is survived by two sons, Larry S. Shaver and wife, Jo Ann of Sanford and Tim J. Shaver and wife, Amy of Salisbury; brother, James Shaver and wife Ruth of Gold Hill, NC; three grandsons, David Shaver and wife Jessica of Rock Hill, SC, Jonathan Shaver of Dallas, TX , and Adam Shaver and wife Donna of Salisbury; great-grandchildren, Sarah, Andrew, Michael, Taryn and Aubrey. Sister-in-laws, Elsie Shaver, Thelma "Tootsie" Burleson, Minnie Wood and Jackie Speight. Calvin is also survived by many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Mary Tittle.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Powles Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. Sean Barrett, pastor.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military graveside rites provided by the Rowan County Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House, or to St. Peters Lutheran Church.
