ROCKWELL - Chester "Check" Overman Holshouser, 89, of Rockwell, died Tuesday (Sept. 27, 2005) in Galax, Va.
Born June 2, 1916, in Rowan County, Mr. Holshouser was a son of the late George T. and Lizzie Joanna Miller Holshouser. Educated in Rowan County schools and at North Carolina State University, he was owner and operator of Holshouser Hardware for 65 years. A life-member of Ursinus United Church of Christ, he was a past deacon. For 40 years, he had been on the Board of Directors of First United Bank, Rockwell Bank and Scottish Bank. He was a past member of the Rockwell Town Board, Rowan County School Board and the Rockwell City Fire Department.
Survivors include wife Helen Louise Boggs Holshouser, whom he married March 27, 1938; daughter Jo Ann Holshouser Arey and husband Vaugh of Galax; brother Victor A. Holshouser of Greensboro; granddaughter Kelly Arey of Galax; and nephew Jimmy Gallimore of Ormand Beach, Fla.
Service : 2 p.m. Friday at Powles Funeral Home chapel conducted by the Rev. Jim Staunton, pastor of Ursinus United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Ursinus United Church of Christ cemetery.
Visitation : 7-8:30 tonight at Powles Funeral Home.
Memorials : Ursinus United Church of Christ, Memorial Fund; or Rowan County United Way.
